Sasol has officially opened applications for its 2027 Bursary Programme, giving South African students the opportunity to pursue full-time undergraduate studies in engineering and science fields.

The bursary programme is one of the major ways the proudly South African chemicals and energy company invests in the country’s youth and future economy.

Sasol currently supports around 300 students studying at institutions across South Africa and continues to grow the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Since 2020, Sasol has awarded more than 500 mainstream bursaries and permanently employed over 300 Engineers and Scientists after they successfully completed its Graduate Development Programme.

According to Monica Luwes, Manager of the Graduate Centre and Development Programme at Sasol, South Africa needs skilled young people to tackle serious national challenges.

“South Africa’s complex challenges, from energy security and water scarcity to climate change, infrastructure development and healthcare delivery, require a new generation of engineers, scientists and innovators,” she said.

She added that the bursary programme helps address the shortage of STEM skills while opening doors for talented youth, especially those from disadvantaged communities.

The programme offers more than just tuition support. Successful applicants receive funding for accommodation, meals, textbooks, pocket money, and study tools such as a laptop and calculator. Students also receive psycho-social support to help them succeed during their studies.

After completing their degrees, bursars may be offered the opportunity to join Sasol’s Graduate Development Programme, which provides a pathway to recognised careers in engineering and science.

Bursaries are available in several fields, including Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, Chemistry, Geology, Industrial Engineering, Data Science and Mine Surveying.

To qualify, applicants must be South African citizens by birth, permanently reside in South Africa, and intend to register for full-time undergraduate studies in 2027 at a Sasol-approved public university.

Studies through UNISA are not included.

Sasol also encourages applications from women, learners from disadvantaged backgrounds, and students from fenceline communities to improve diversity in STEM careers.

Interested and eligible students must submit their applications before May 17 2026.
