In an effort to cultivate a clean and safe learning environment, the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Administration (DARDLEA) collaborated with the Department of Education’s “Rhandza Xikolo Xa Wena” initiative.

This was undertaken at the Methula Secondary School in Diepdale, within the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality.

As part of the day’s activities, DARDLEA officials engaged with learners while delivering an insightful Climate Change Literacy Programme. Students learnt practical ways to benefit the environment; making organic compost, recycling and cultivating seedlings.

Demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices, DARDLEA also spearheaded the establishment of a food garden at the school and oversaw the planting of trees. To further support the school’s ongoing greening efforts, a food garden starter pack was donated.

The success of the initiative was bolstered by participation of various stakeholders, highlighting a strong community commitment to education and environmental stewardship.

Partners included the Universal Greening Organisation (UGO), Old Mutual, representatives from both local and Gert Sibande District Municipalities, Correctional Services, SAPS, Bukhosi BakaNdlela and the School Governing Body (SGB).

This collaborative effort served as prime example of how integrated community initiatives could empower students with vital environmental knowledge and contribute to a more sustainable and enriching educational experience.
